I had a friend who graduated from high school. Family originally came here from Germany. He went home for a present. Came back here and told the family that their German Clan listened to this guy “Hitler” on the radio. The war broke out and Jack joined the 82ND Airborne. Jumped on D-Day, Germans captured him, he spoke German and they were confused he said he was a U.S. citizen. He escaped. After the “Battle of the Bulge”, Sgt Jack Schlegel was put in-charge of some German POW’s. He had to sign his name. The officer flipped the log of prisoners around and pointe at the name: Schlegel. Jack looked at it and said, “Manfred, my cousin”. They brought this prisoner down and Jack said to him in German: “How do you like your Hitler now”. Manfred ended up on a farm in Florida. Stayed after the war (married the farmer’s daughter). The happy couple moved to Germany after Manfred became a $Millionaire! Jack became a Police Chief in upstate NY. The 508th Parachute Association misses him!
